On Saturday, May 24, Dr. Jong-Hoon Kim and his staff were the main event of our final Burn Your Brain event of the semester. They presented the Discovery Lab’s QuadCopter project, showing the 25 attendees the technical ins and outs of building robotic flying devices. The students also learned how to write code to interpret realtime data from the same types of motion sensors used in robotic flying devices. Kim was assisted by Deon Wilkins, Fernando Campo, and Jaime Acevedo from the Discovery Lab. This was the 5th and final Burn Your Brain event of the semester, which has now reached approximately 120 computer students from Dade and Broward counties.
Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day (May 15th 2014)
Discovery Lab were participated on “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” event and provide our Lab tours including TeleBot demo for 130 attendees. We have received great feedback about the wonderful learning experience not only for the students, but also, for our FIU parents.

Justin Rodriguez and Hunter Michko presented their research, “Design of a Low Cost Emergency Response Bot,äó at FCRAR 2014. The ERBot is designed to be an immediate first responder for small fires and attacks on school campuses while being developed inexpensively to be affordable for schools. The ERBot was demonstrated as a part of their presentation.

The Discovery Lab was present at the eMerge Americas in Miami Beach Convention Center to be part of the technological representation of FIU. This was one of the biggest events that the Discovery Lab has had the honor to present at and included great technological projects from all over the state. We had a lot of questions and interest on the TeleBot and our work as a research laboratory in general. We were able to make a lot of connections with interested people throughout the country and proudly present our work as FIU students. Many news stations were also there to see the many great projects present at the event. It was truly a great experience.

Technology and Education Converge
The Discovery Lab had the pleasure of being invited to the Technology and Education Converge Town Hall Meeting and meet some of the most amazing minds of the technology industry here in South Florida. The event was hosted by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and was held indoors at Jungle Island. We had the opportunity to show one of our projects, the Telebot, to many of the present, who were baffled with the technological progress that we have had in this past year and a half of development. One comment we very often had was of FIU Alumni that kept insisting on how far has the school developed since they last there there. The event had many great Keynote Speakers including Dr Mark Rosenberg , current president of FIU, as well as many other Technology and Education leaders around South Florida, including Edward Martinez, Chief Information Officer for Miami Children’s Hospital and Dr Helena Solo-Gabriele, Associate Dean for UM College of Engineering. This was surely a great honor for all present, and a great opportunity to showcase the technological achievements of the Computer and Information Science Department and FIU as a whole.
