Current Projects

This is a List of projects currently being developed and worked on.

– Statistics Game (Untitled)

Education is essential to the growth of a young mind. Mathematics is often used as a tool to reinforce critical thinking and sharpen skill sets. This web-based, shopping simulation game will teach basic statistics principles to middle school students.
Advisor: Dr. Nagarajan Prabakar
Student Members: Jose Maldonado, Martin Di Diego, Kennet Postigo

– Virtual Reality Research
Virtual Reality is a simulated experience that shows its user a surreal environment created in real-time. The Discovery Lab dedicates research to further understand Virtual Reality concepts such as virtual motion, virtual
object placement, user interactions within a virtual space and effective scenario simulation. This will be applied into building a virtual reality set prototype.

Swarm Controlled UAV
The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in the area of applied research is accelerating at an astonishing rate. With the advances made in technology to extend the control of these vehicles, the opportunity to control multiple aircraft at a time presents itself as a natural progression towards autonomy. Using a wireless link to control the aircraft, the objective is to create scouting vehicles that can cover a large area in a short amount of time.

American Heritage Day Camp

On Tuesday July 15, we had a visit at the Discovery Lab of 30 students with the American Heritage for a Day Camp at FIU. We were able to show them out work at the Discovery Lab which included projects such as the Smart Mannequin, Quadrucopters, Prosthetic Limbs, and the Telebot. They students had a good opportunity to see first hand some of the project they can build in the field of Computer Science and Engineering. It was a great learning opportunity.

Summer Workshop

The Discovery Lab hosted a Quadrucopter Workshop and it was a success. We registered a small number of 10 students and each were given a kit and lectures throughout the 3 days the event lasted, which concluded in successfully testing their quad-copters. The students learned many aspects of robotics through this event all the way from hardware to software to aerodynamics and everything in between. It was truly an amazing experience for both participants and tutors.

‘Girls that Code’ Visit

On Tuesday July 22, we had a visit at the Discovery Lab of 30 female students with the Girls that Code group at FIU. We were able to show them out work at the Discovery Lab which included projects such as the Smart Mannequin, Quadrucopters, Prosthetic Limbs, and the Telebot. They students had a good opportunity to see first hand some of the project they can build in the field of Computer Science and Engineering hopefully attracting them towards these fields. It was a great learning opportunity.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day (May 15th 2014)

Discovery Lab were participated on “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” event and provide our Lab tours including TeleBot demo for 130 attendees. We have received great feedback about the wonderful learning experience not only for the students, but also, for our FIU parents.

The 16th Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics (FCRAR-2014)

The 16th Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics (FCRAR-2014), May 8 – 9th 2014

Justin Rodriguez and Hunter Michko presented their research, “Design of a Low Cost Emergency Response Bot,äó at FCRAR 2014.  The ERBot is designed to be an immediate first responder for small fires and attacks on school campuses while being developed inexpensively to be affordable for schools. The ERBot was demonstrated as a part of their presentation.

eMerge Americas

eMerge Americas

The Discovery Lab was present at the eMerge Americas in Miami Beach Convention Center to be part of the technological representation of FIU. This was one of the biggest events that the Discovery Lab has had the honor to present at and included great technological projects from all over the state. We had a lot of questions and interest on the TeleBot and our work as a research laboratory in general. We were able to make a lot of connections with interested people throughout the country and proudly present our work as FIU students. Many news stations were also there to see the many great projects present at the event. It was truly a great experience.
