Discovery Lab 2023
Welcome to Discovery Lab 2021 at Florida International University’s School of Computing and Information Sciences! Discovery lab is an undergraduate research lab focused on providing undergraduates at FIU with a research experience into a wide variety of computer science domains. Our core areas of research expertise include robotics, reconfigurable software, AI-based digital forensics, quantum computing, sensors and sensor systems, machine learning, visualization, etc.
Founding
Discovery Lab was created in Spring 2012 to provide a dedicated undergraduate research lab for computer science students in the School of Computing and Information Sciences. The founding director, Dr. S. S. Iyengar described the laboratories founding as, “the discovery lab provides a platform to develop many new ideas. The lab is comparable in its mission to the labs at top universities. We are educating entrepreneurs, sustaining research and developing products that can be commercialized. We are training the next generation of students with a 21st century skills they need to succeed.”
Mission
Discovery Lab’s mission since its founding has been to:
- Engage undergraduate students in hands-on learning,
- Solve real-world challenges,
- Strengthen and position the lab as a solution center within FIU,
- Develop student led research opportunities
- guided by facts and
- foster experience in systems development, and
- Build entrepreneurial skills among the students.
Faculty
The Discovery Lab researchers collaborate extensively with researchers around the world in many of the current technology driven areas.
- Dr. S. S. Iyengar (iyengar@cis.fiu.edu), is a University Distinguished Professor and Founding Director of the Discovery Lab. Dr. Iyengar is the former Director and Ryder Professor at the School of Computing and Information Sciences and was previously the Department Chair for computerscience at Louisiana State University. He is a world-renowned researcher, who has published more than 600 research papers and authored/co-authored or edited 22 books. He is an IEEE Fellow, ACM Fellow, Fellow of AAAS, AIMBE Fellow, Fellow of NAI, etc. He leads the Discovery Lab research efforts and student mentoring.
- Colonel Jerry F. Miller (millej@fiu.edu), USAF (Retired) is the Associate Director of the Lab and provides research and student oversight, laboratory coordination, and mentoring. Col. Miller is a 28-year Air Force veteran and has been at the University since 2006, where he has conducted research in telecommunications and networking, privacy and security, renewable energy, global security and strategic studies.
- Dr. Mario Mastirani (mmastria@fiu.edu), is a world renowned expert in Quantum Computing and has published more than 100 papers in quantum computing in Springer Nature and other quantum computing journals. He has 3 Ph.D. degrees from Buenos Aires and is a researcher at FIU SCIS collaborating with Dr. Iyengar.
- Dr. Latesh Kumar KJ (lkumarkj@fiu.edu), is an expert in AI based cloud computing and has written more than 50 papers and has a Ph.D. from Malaysia. He is also an Adjunct researcher at FIU SCIS.
- Dr. Nagarajan Prabakar (prabakar@cis.fiu.edu), is a founding Faculty Member at the Discovery Lab and is an Associate Professor at SCIS. Dr. Prabakar is engaged in a variety of research areas including tele-robotics, fault-tolerant distributed computing grid with large number of sensors, computer networks, image processing for spatial data, Computer vision, multimedia databases and system security.
- Dr. Debra Davis (dledavis@fiu.edu), is also a Founding Faculty member at the Discovery Lab and Associate Teaching Professor at SCIS. Her research interests include applied usability studies and human computer interaction, the All-Stars Effectiveness Research Project, and Terrafly: a high-performance web-based digital library system for spatial data access.
What We Do
We provide industry partners with research designed to solve industry challenges.
We collaborate with industry to solve “real-world” problems, providing hands-on reinforcement of the student classroom experience. Our students work to take their ideas into the commercial marketplace through our entrepreneurial mentoring.
We are a solution center!
