FIU-PUT Fulbright Specialist Program

In April of 2018 Dr. S.S. Iyengar, University Distinguished Professor, Former Director and Ryder Professor of the School of Computing and Information Sciences applied for the Fulbright Specialist Program. The program included expert consultation on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at Poznan University of Technology in Poznan, Poland, to assist them with a project titled, “Towards Smart Cities: A Mobile and Social Networking Approach.”

The specific project was FSP-P004518 titled “Towards Smart Cities: A Mobile and Social Networking Approach” at Poznan University of Technology through a request from this university based upon my subject matter expertise and skills they required. The host at PUT was Dr. Pawel Sniatala, PhD, DSc., Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Technology and Computing, Poznan University of Technology, who has been the point of contact on most of the collaborative activities that have been completed and are in the pipeline between FIU and PUT. During this program, more than 80 faculty members including the Dean and Directors were involved in discussing faculty research collaboration, identifying areas of expertise that can be a part of Knowledge exchange and information on the future of computer science and how FIU and PUT could best work together.

Representatives from IEEE and the University’s Electronic Telecom Networking and Computing Section were also involved in a discussion on the future of Internet of Things (IoT) and the students’ and the University’s role in this expanding future of technology. More than 100 students were also a part of the discussion which included topics like IOT resources, fundamentals, requirements and future directions.

The administration was eager to collaborate and identified techniques that can be used for knowledge exchange between the two universities and establish a strategic plan forward concerning the University’s role in the development of future Smart Cities and the use of artificial intelligence, cloud and big data, Tele robotics and other topics of interest and concern to the University.

Some of the faculty and researchers who were actively involved in the conversations and collaborations since are:

  • Dr Konard Kulakowski, Deputy Head, Dept. of Applied Computer Science, AGH University in Krakow, Poland.
  • Dr. Tomasz Szmuc, Dept. of Applied Computer Science, AGH University in Krakow, Poland.
  • Dr. Witold Machowski, Dept. of Electronics, AGH University in Krakow, Poland.
  • Dr. Marek Zmuda, Firmware Architect, Data Center Group, Intel, Gdansk, Poland
  • Dr. Krzysztaf Krawier, Deputy Heasd of Science, Poznan University of Technology and others from various universities.

Outcomes:

The single most important outcome of the project was a consolidation of the efforts from both Universities to continue collaborative research, faculty and research exchanges and to work together on important, upcoming professional computer science conferences and workshops. A strategic plan was devised to bring the two universities closer together and improve overall collaborative research for both universities. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also drafted between the universities highlighting the opportunities for collaborative research, faculty exchange, and future interactions for conferences and workshops based on the successful activities during this project. Continued formal and informal linkages that will benefit both institutions as well as our countries in advancing research in the future are expected.

Collaborative outcomes thus far:
